Advantages Of Seaweed Cultivation In Malaysia
Good Quality, Demand Exceeds Supply
Currently, other countries like South Korea, Mexico, the Philippines and Japan are also producing seaweed, but of lower grades (Grades 15-30), whereas in Sabah, our seaweed is recognised worldwide as being of higher grades (Grades 30-45). There is a shortage of such high grade seaweed being supplied to the market.
Global Market Trend of the Seaweed Eucheuma Cottonii
Due to high demand, the price of seaweed has appreciated by an average rate of 18.36%, from USD 700 in 2003, to USD 1600 in 2010. At this rate of value appreciation, seaweed is comparable to GOLD.

Endless Business Opportunities
Under the 9th Malaysia Plan, Sabah is required to produce 250,000 tonnes of seaweed annually by the year 2010. However, up till now, Sabah’s seaweed production only amounts to 40,000-50,000 tonnes.
